The Hydrogen Society of Australia’s NSW Chapter will hold its first annual Australia Hydrogen Day event tomorrow, 8 October, bringing together speakers working across government, research, hydrogen projects and industry.

The Sydney event forms part of Australia Hydrogen Day 2026, with HSA chapters in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and NSW running their own programs.

The date, 8 October, or 10/08, is a reference to hydrogen’s atomic weight of 1.008.

For NSW, the program will focus on the practical role of hydrogen and renewable fuels in the energy transition, industrial decarbonisation and energy security, including some of the issues facing projects as they move towards commercial deployment.

HSA said the event would examine emerging technologies, projects, policy, commercialisation and the challenges of scaling hydrogen in Australia.

Government, industry and research on the program

The NSW program brings together speakers from several parts of the hydrogen sector.

NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Hydrogen Program Manager Gary Foster will speak alongside James Christian, Business Manager for Powerfuels including Hydrogen Network at the NSW Decarbonisation Innovation Hub.

The industry speakers are Lion Energy Project Director Mitch Blyth, Linde South Pacific Head of Marketing Chris Dolman, Andrew McCluskey from SMC and Hiringa Energy Head of Development Jack Rickers.

University of Sydney Professor of Chemistry Kondo-Francois Aguey-Zinsou, whose research includes hydrogen technologies, is also on the program.

Presentations and networking will run from 1pm to 4pm, following registration from 12.30pm at Macquarie University City Campus, Level 24, 123 Pitt Street, Sydney.

NSW chapter returns to face-to-face events

The event also marks a return to face-to-face activities for HSA’s NSW Chapter.

The organisation said the event was intended to provide a forum for people working across the NSW hydrogen sector to reconnect and exchange information, including project developers, researchers, industry representatives and emerging professionals.

HSA describes itself as a non-profit organisation working to advance hydrogen development and adoption in Australia through events, networking, knowledge sharing and collaboration.

It was launched in January 2018 by representatives of Innovate Australia, Woodside and Siemens and now operates state chapters in NSW, Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

Last year, Australia Hydrogen Day included in-person chapter events in WA, SA, Victoria and Queensland. NSW joins the program in 2026.
