Young people aged 18 to 35 across the Greater Hunter have a chance to influence decisions affecting their communities, with recruitment now open for the 2025 Youth Committee for the Hunter.

Run by the Committee for the Hunter, the Youth Committee brings together up to 13 people from across the ten local government areas that make up the region – Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Maitland, Port Stephens, Cessnock, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Upper Hunter, MidCoast and Dungog.

The Youth Committee was established as part of a commitment to the Youth Employment Charter, a COVID-era initiative to maintain and grow opportunities for young people. Since then, it has become a consistent forum for young people to advise government, develop professionally, and speak out on the issues that matter to them.

“Young people are the region’s most valuable resource. We want to ensure their voices are listened to and that leaders are focused on the issues that matter to them,” said a spokesperson for the Committee for the Hunter.

The group helps shape the organisation’s advocacy work and provides direct advice to the Committee’s CEO and Board. Importantly, one Youth Committee member is also appointed as a Director on the Board, which allows for a more hands-on role in decision-making.

“This advice is not tokenistic. A member of the Youth Committee is appointed as Director to the Committee for the Hunter Board,” the organisation states. “Our Board is committed to empowering young people to become the leaders our region needs.”

Committee members also run the Youth Voice Hunter survey every two years, and have contributed to reports such as Going Places, which was launched in partnership with the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads. Many have also been supported to take part in public forums and media appearances.

Applicants should be ready to contribute actively through meetings and project work, and demonstrate strong communication skills, a willingness to work with others, and a good understanding of the issues affecting young people in the Hunter. While professional experience is not required, an interest in learning skills such as report writing, project management, and governance is encouraged.

Those interested in applying need to provide a short written response to the selection criteria, a resume or CV, and contact details for two referees.

Applications close on Monday 28 April 2025. If you are considering applying and would like more information on the Youth Committee to inform your decision, please contact the Committee team via info@hunter.org.au.
