EnergyCo has invited companies to register their interest in a tender to design and build an open-air storage area at the proposed Newcastle Logistics Precinct, located next to the Port of Newcastle.

The facility is intended to expand portside storage capacity for equipment required to deliver renewable energy projects across the state, including oversize overmass components such as wind turbines and transformers.

Registrations will close on 17 April 2026. Companies that meet capability and experience requirements will be shortlisted and invited to participate in an Expression of Interest (EOI) stage scheduled for May 2026.

A staging point for large-scale energy infrastructure

The Newcastle Logistics Precinct is designed as a coordination point for transporting and storing renewable energy equipment as part of the upgrade of NSW’s electricity system.

Located on the government-owned Intertrade site adjacent to the port lease area, the precinct will connect directly to the state road network and the Port to Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) route. This positioning is intended to support the increasing volume of large components arriving through Newcastle for projects across NSW.

EnergyCo Executive Director Project Interface and Strategic Coordination Azaria Dobson said, “The Newcastle Logistics Precinct is the gateway to our energy transformation.”

Procurement pathway and timing

The procurement process for the precinct will run through 2026, moving from registration to EOI and then to a formal Request for Tender phase.

The Request for Tender stage, where shortlisted proponents prepare detailed submissions for assessment, is expected to begin in early 2027.

Subject to planning and environmental approvals, construction is expected to start in 2027, with initial operations targeted for 2028.

Local industry engagement planned

EnergyCo has indicated that the project will create job opportunities and provide a pathway for local businesses to participate in delivery.

An industry briefing is planned for August 2026, aimed at connecting smaller regional construction businesses with shortlisted tenderers. The session is intended to support collaboration and identify subcontracting and supply opportunities across the Hunter.

Dobson said, “The industry briefing later in 2026 will help companies across the Hunter Region learn about the Newcastle Logistics Precinct, make valuable connections and explore ways to get involved.”

Planning and investment context

The Newcastle Logistics Precinct is currently in the planning phase, with a scoping report lodged in March 2025 and an Environmental Impact Statement in preparation. The project will also be subject to a public exhibition period.

The NSW Government has committed $115.5 million to develop the precinct, which forms part of a broader set of enabling projects across the Hunter region linked to the transition of the electricity system.

The precinct is intended to support the delivery of renewable energy to homes and businesses by improving how large-scale equipment is received, stored and transported from the Port of Newcastle into Renewable Energy Zones and other project sites across the state.
