Works to upgrade key freight routes from Newcastle to the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) are set to begin within weeks, following the awarding of the first stage contract under the Port to REZ Program.

The $128 million project is focused on preparing regional roads to carry large wind and solar farm components, while also leaving lasting improvements for local drivers. The NSW Government has committed $110.5 million to the program, with an additional $18 million from the Australian Government.

BMD Constructions Pty Ltd has been selected to carry out this first phase of works, which includes road and intersection upgrades at 19 locations stretching from the Port of Newcastle to Elong Elong near Dubbo. The project is expected to support 60 construction jobs and bring traffic and safety improvements to the region.

Work will begin at several key spots, including Selwyn Street in Mayfield North, Lonsdale Street in Jerrys Plains, Vinegaroy Road in Cassilis and Barneys Reef Road in Dunedoo. Improvements will include pavement widening, new turning lanes, drainage works and utility adjustments, depending on the site.

While the aim is to enable the safe transport of oversized equipment needed to build renewable energy infrastructure, the project is also expected to benefit communities by reducing travel delays and improving safety at intersections.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley said the project reflects the continuing energy role of the region. “The Hunter has powered the state for decades and this project will help ensure we continue to be an energy powerhouse for further decades to come.”

Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison also welcomed the contract award. “These 19 road upgrades will result in greater capacity and a safer road environment from the Port of Newcastle, through the Hunter and then into the Central West where these farms will be located.”

The upgrades are expected to be completed at many of the 19 locations this year, with more projects under consideration as the program progresses.
