A new resource has been introduced to assist landholders in New South Wales as the state advances its renewable energy projects. The NSW Renewable Energy and Transmission Guide, launched in April, is designed to support landowners and community members in understanding the process of transitioning to renewable energy.

Developed through collaboration between NSW Farmers, the Queensland Farmers Federation, and the NSW Government, the guide aims to improve communication and understanding between landowners, developers, government agencies, and contractors involved in renewable projects.

Minister for Energy Penny Sharpe said, “This guide reflects our commitment to working with farmers, landowners, and others to give them the information they need to engage confidently in renewable energy projects.”

She added that it will serve as a practical resource for individuals, businesses, and communities seeking clarity about the energy transition.

The guide provides comprehensive information on engaging with renewable energy developers, covering negotiations, agreements, and understanding each party’s rights and responsibilities. It also explains the planning and delivery process for transmission infrastructure and aims to demystify the development process for neighbours and the broader community.

Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW Tara Moriarty spoke of the benefits for farmers, saying, “This guide will assist farmers as they navigate the opportunities and challenges involved in the transition to renewable energy in NSW. It will help landholders understand potential impacts and how they can benefit from new investment while maintaining their land’s productivity.”

EnergyCo’s CEO, Hannah McCaughey, emphasised the importance of landowner awareness, noting, “It is critical that landowners are across their rights and responsibilities, and the opportunities this once-in-a-generation project brings. Host communities are at the centre of the transition and should benefit from their role in it.”

The guide originates from an agreement between NSW Farmers, EnergyCo, and ACEREZ, the network operator for the Central-West Orana REZ, to facilitate communication and collaboration, ensuring landholders are well-informed about the projects impacting their land.

The Central-West Orana REZ, centred around Dubbo and Dunedoo, is expected to attract up to $20 billion in private investment by 2030. This development is projected to create approximately 5,000 construction jobs and provide opportunities for local suppliers. The NSW Government is also investing $128 million into community grants to support local groups and councils, with the first recipients announced recently to help prepare the region for upcoming construction activities.

The development of these zones is part of the state’s plan to keep NSW’s electricity supply reliable as coal-fired power stations retire. The REZs will group wind and solar projects to facilitate efficient storage and transmission, helping to lower electricity costs and support local economic growth.

The guide is available in both print and online through the NSW Farmers website, ensuring accessible information for those directly involved in or affected by renewable energy projects across the region.
