Organisations have less than ten days to submit their registration for the design and construction of the Newcastle Logistics Precinct, with the deadline set for 17 April 2026.
EnergyCo is seeking suitably experienced contractors to take part in the procurement process, which will determine who progresses to the Expression of Interest stage and ultimately the Request for Tender.
Only organisations that complete the required documentation and meet capability and experience thresholds will be invited to proceed.
Port-side project to support renewable build-out
EnergyCo will develop the precinct next to the Port of Newcastle to expand storage capacity for equipment needed to construct renewable energy projects across the state.
The site will function as an open-air storage area designed to handle oversize overmass equipment, including wind turbines and transformers, which are required for Renewable Energy Zone construction.
The project is part of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, which is driving the delivery of new renewable generation, storage and transmission infrastructure across New South Wales.
Scope and delivery approach
The Newcastle Logistics Precinct will be developed at the former BHP Steelworks Intertrade site and will include hardstand areas, internal roads, drainage infrastructure, access points and supporting facilities such as amenities and parking.
The precinct is intended to improve the handling and movement of large equipment arriving through the Port and destined for Renewable Energy Zones across the Central-West Orana, New England and Hunter-Central Coast regions.
Procurement pathway and what comes next
This current stage is an invitation to register and is a mandatory first step for participation in the broader procurement process.
Following registration, shortlisted organisations will be invited into the Expression of Interest phase in May 2026, with a Request for Tender stage expected to follow and formal tendering anticipated to begin in early 2027.
EnergyCo has indicated that the project will be subject to planning and environmental approvals, including an Environmental Impact Statement and a public exhibition period later this year.
Industry briefing to connect local businesses
An industry briefing is planned for August 2026 to connect smaller regional construction businesses with shortlisted tenderers.
EnergyCo Executive Director Project Interface and Strategic Coordination Azaria Dobson said, “The Newcastle Logistics Precinct is the gateway to our energy transformation.”
“Our early market engagement has informed how we package delivery of the Newcastle Logistics Precinct and we are expecting strong interest.”
She said EnergyCo is focused on ensuring regional participation, stating, “We are always looking for ways to maximise regional benefits as we transform the energy system.”
“The industry briefing later in 2026 will help companies across the Hunter Region learn about the Newcastle Logistics Precinct, make valuable connections and explore ways to get involved.”
The Newcastle Logistics Scoping Report is now available on the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure’s website here.
