An upcoming Business Social in Newcastle is being framed as a working session for businesses seeking clearer visibility over workforce supply, skills demand and future capability gaps.

Delivered with support from the University of Newcastle and promoted by Business Hunter, the event will bring together employers, industry representatives and professionals to examine how workforce expectations are changing and what that means for business.

The session will introduce the University of Newcastle’s Looking Ahead 2030 direction, outlining how it intends to work more closely with industry across skills development, research and workforce pathways.

Early access to talent and workforce insight

For businesses, the event is positioned as an opportunity to engage directly with the future workforce before it formally enters the market.

Discussions will centre on how employers can strengthen access to emerging talent, improve workforce pipelines and build earlier connections with students and early-career professionals.

The session will also provide insight into how skills demand is shifting across the region, helping businesses assess where capability gaps may emerge and how to respond.

Turning engagement into workforce outcomes

A key focus of the evening is moving beyond networking to identify where engagement can translate into practical outcomes for business.

This includes opportunities to connect with the University on workforce pathways, access talent streams earlier and explore collaboration across research and commercial activity.

The format is designed to encourage direct interaction between industry, education and government, with an emphasis on building relationships that support workforce development over time.

The event is being delivered in partnership with Hunter Young Professionals, Newcastle Business Club and Committee for the Hunter, bringing multiple parts of the regional economy into the same conversation.

Positioning business within the 2030 direction

The introduction of the University’s 2030 direction provides a reference point for how industry can engage more directly in shaping workforce outcomes.

For businesses, this creates a defined pathway to influence how skills are developed, how training aligns with industry need and how future employees are prepared for the roles they will enter.

Attendees will also gain a clearer understanding of how evolving capability requirements may affect their operations, workforce planning and long-term growth.

The event will be held on Tuesday 19 May 2026 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the McLarty Room, Callaghan Campus, with general admission set at $55 plus booking fee.
