Making the move to renewable energy at home will soon be simpler for households across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland, with the launch of the Solar Neighbourhoods program. The initiative, developed jointly by the three councils, provides residents and small businesses with access to pre-vetted solar, battery and EV charger packages, installed by accredited Hunter-based electricians.
The councils say the program was shaped in response to community feedback about the difficulty of choosing reliable systems and installers. Newcastle Councillor Callum Pull said the initiative removes the most common obstacles to installing solar.
“We’ve heard from residents across the three council areas that they want solar and batteries for their homes, but are overwhelmed by the choice, upfront cost and complexity of buying solar systems,” Cr Pull said.
Through a joint tender and due diligence process, the councils selected 1KOMMA5° Australia as the program partner. The company will deliver systems through its local network — including STE, Apollo, Hunter Solar Solutions and Sinewave Solar Solutions — ensuring work is carried out by local, SAA-accredited tradespeople.
Households and small businesses can choose from several solar and battery options, with upfront purchase or instalment payment plans available. Participants will also receive an exclusive discount of $1,250, alongside access to government rebates.
According to Cr Pull, the program also supports local environmental goals: “This program also aligns with a key priority in our Newcastle Environment Strategy, which is to support the transition of the Newcastle LGA to net zero emissions through an accelerated uptake of onsite solar and batteries.”
Lake Macquarie Deputy Mayor Jack Antcliff said the partnership represents a practical way for residents to cut bills and emissions.
“We’re proud to support programs that help households lower their electricity bills and contribute to a more sustainable future,” Cr Antcliff said.
“This partnership reflects a united regional approach to reducing emissions and accelerating the transition to renewable energy, an outcome that benefits individuals, their neighbourhoods and the Hunter as a whole.”
Solar Neighbourhoods also includes educational activities such as a free online webinar hosted by experts from the three councils and 1KOMMA5°, designed to explain how solar and batteries can affect household energy bills and how to select the right system size.
